Microchip launches AVR SD series entry-level microcontrollers (MCUs) to reduce system costs and complexity for safety critical applications
To help engineers minimize design costs and complexity under strict safety requirements, Microchip Technology Inc. has officially launched the AVR SD series of microcontrollers (MCUs). This series of microcontrollers integrates built-in functional safety mechanisms, designed for applications that require high reliability verification, and is priced at less than $1, becoming the first entry-level single-chip machine in this price range to meet the requirements of Automotive Safety Integrity Level C (ASIL C) and Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2). The functional safety management system of this series of microcontrollers has been certified by T Ü V Rheinland in Germany, further enhancing its safety performance. The AVR SD series microcontroller has multiple hardware security features, including a dual core lockstep CPU, dual-mode analog-to-digital converter (ADC), full memory error correction code (ECC), dedicated error control module, error injection mechanism, and voltage and clock monitor. These features significantly shorten the fault detection time and reduce software complexity, supporting the goal of achieving a fault detection time interval (FDTI) as low as 1 millisecond, effectively preventing dangerous situations and improving system reliability.
Combined with Microchip's security framework software, this series of microcontrollers can autonomously manage functional security diagnostics, detect and handle errors, and trigger security states when necessary. This series of microcontrollers can be used as the main processor to achieve key functions with minimal power consumption, such as detecting thermal runaway or monitoring sensor data such as rotational position. It is also an excellent candidate product for coprocessors in complex systems, capable of mirroring or uninstalling safety critical functions, suitable for applications with high safety integrity levels, and can support up to ASIL D and SIL 3 levels.
Greg Robinson, Vice President of Microchip's MCU Business Unit, said, "When designing safety critical applications, engineers typically can only use expensive and complex devices. By integrating specific safety features directly into entry-level MCUs and providing supporting software frameworks, we are helping customers meet strict safety standards with higher efficiency. With the AVR SD series, designers can greatly shorten development time and minimize system and certification costs
The AVR SD series microcontrollers comply with ISO 26262 (automotive) and IEC 61508 (industrial) international safety standards, and are suitable for various fields such as aerospace and defense, industrial automation, automotive, and medical. Specifically, they include flight control systems, ignition control, robot safety functions, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and medical infusion pumps.
development tool
Developers can develop based on the T Ü V S Ü D certified MPLAB XC8 Pro compiler and Microchip Curiosity Nano development board, supported by a functional safety software package that includes safety documentation (fault mode, effects, and diagnostic analysis reports, safety manuals, dependency fault analysis reports), safety software, and compliance reports.
Supply and Pricing
The starting price for AVR SD microcontrollers (MCUs) is $0.93 per piece (with a minimum order of 5000 pieces), and bulk purchases can enjoy lower discounts.
